Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” To Become Top Selling Album of All Time

July 20, 2009 by Porky

Michael Jackson’s 1982 album Thriller is poised to surpass Eagles’ Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 and become the highest selling album ever.

In March, Thriller was certified 28 times platinum, a notch behind the Eagles’ 1976 album that was certified 29 times platinum in 2006.

There has been a surge in Thriller sales following Jackson’s death on June 25 and Sony Music Entertainment is pushing album CDs into the distribution pipeline to meet the increased demand.

Billboard estimates that product shipments, if not sales, have already crossed the 29 million unit mark in the United States.

Jackson’s hit collections Number Ones and Thriller have become his most sought after albums since his death. According to Nielsen SoundScan, Thriller moved 552,000 U.S. copies during the three weeks that ended July 12, bringing year-to-date sales to 608,000.

In the same three weeks combined sales of Jackson’s albums have risen from 422,000 through 800,000 to 1.1 million.
