Although his debut album South Central State Of Mind is only 60% complete, Nip Hussle gives a play-by-play in his latest blog post at XXL.
Intro— Produced by Detroit Red, scratches by Scram Jones: This record right here sets the whole tone of my album. Detroit Red made “Hussle In The House” so you already know this record right here is hard as fuck!
Hussle In The House— Produced by Detroit Red
Hussle Is My Last Name— Produced by Ralo: This record right here is my next single. My homie Ralo who been producing for me since day one did this record. It got a West Coast vibe to it but with a Down South bounce. I think y’all are gonna love this. The whole concept is anyone who’s a hustler can relate to this. If you a hustler then Hussle Is Your Last Name. Apply that to whoever you want that hustled their way into money. Khaled Hussle, Lebron Hussle, etc etc…
I Don’t Give A Fuck— Produced by QD3 & Jonny Shipes: This record is some deep shit that I actually recorded before I got my record deal, but it’s so timeless that it wound up makin’ the album. QD3 produced the original beat and Shipes came in and touched it up. The shit is where I was at in life before I had hope of makin’ it out of the hood.
Blue Laces— Produced by Mr. Lee: This is my favorite record on the album so far. I can’t even speak on it or describe it. All I can say is cop the album for this song alone!
Bluffin— Produced by The Runners: This is a potential single. This is big music right here! I went down to Miami and knocked this out with them at Khaled’s spot. He went nuts when he heard this joint.! It’s on some “y’all thought I was bluffin’, back against the wall” type shit but I’m here now!
Rich Roll—Produced by Mental Instruments & Jonny Shipes: This is some shit for the ladies but the streets gonna fuck with it too because I’m sayin’ some real shit on the record. Mental Instruments came with the concept and they had a hook on the record. When I heard it I loved the melody of the hook but not what it was sayin’ so I flipped it and made it make sense to what I know and what made sense to me which was some “Rich Rollin” shit. This is gonna be one of the singles as well.
Hussle Hussle Hussle— Produced by JR Rotem: This is a MONSTER right here. JR at his finest. It got Sean Kingston on the hook and I go in on the verses. This is some street club shit. And it sounds huge!

Album - Teairra Mari - At That Point
Release Date: November 2009
Tracklisting
1. “I Know It’s You”
Produced by Joachim Bynum
The uptempo, heavy bass on this album’s opener acts as a dizzying backdrop for a song dealing with a topic that would drive any girl bananas. “I think it’s cute how you don’t know me,” Mari croons frustratingly yet lustfully to a guy who’s loving her in private, yet ignoring her publicly. Talk about being at that point where you’d want to go upside someone’s head!
2. “Holla”
Produced by Rico Love
A ballad co-written by the producer and Mari, “Holla” finds the songstress hitting the pause button on a detrimental relationship. She shocks her guy over a piano background by declaring, “You didn’t think I’d be leavin’/ The joke’s on you, now we even.” One of the best tracks on the album.
3. “Sponsor” featuring Gucci Mane
Produced by Z. Lewis, B. Muhammed, & J. Phillips
Mari dedicated this street anthem to her college-age “struggling” lady friends that are able to get a guy to “fill up a cup for [her], fill up a tank for [her].” Is “Sponsor” the 2009 vernacular for sugar daddy? Well, if the girl can brag that, “Anything [you] ask from [your] sponsor, he goes and buy it,” without having to give anything in return, we say do your thing, P.Y.T.!
4. “Cause a Scene” featuring Flo Rida
Produced by The Runners
A low, yet heavy and strong bass and drums set the tone for what could happen if Ms. Mari’s hang time is rudely interrupted. “I’m up here on this gasoline/ You know I’m ’bout to take my shoes off and grab my Vaseline,” she warns to any disrespectful chick trying to knock her down. And Flo Rida’s on standby as a backup if needed.
5. “Diamonds” featuring Kanye West
Produced by Madd Scientist
Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, and if Mari’s claiming that her love for a guy is comparable to the affection she has for her favorite jewel, then she’s loving you long time. Mr. “Diamonds Are Forever” Kanye West also waxes poetically on the track about (what else?) how he styles and profiles while draped in ice. If every diamond is unique and unlike any other, then this song lacks in grade and value, due to the production. The beat mimics Fergie’s “Glamorous,” background hand claps and all.
6. “Find My Way Back”
Produced by Neff-U
Mari revealed during the listening session that she was compelled to write this song after realizing that she’s “always messing up good relationships,” said with a sad laugh. Solution? Pen a song begging for her guy to “don’t tell [her] that it’s over” because she’s going to do all she can “to make it back to you.” However, she sings on the track in a whisper so tantalizing that we’re willing to bet she won’t be in the doghouse for long.
7. “Hunt 4 U” featuring Pleasure P
Produced by Rico Love
The Good: The song’s sentiment is sweet enough, as Mari is searching for the guy she once fell in love with. Yes, he’s gone ghost figuratively, as his personality has switched up. But instead of kicking him to the curb, she’s willing to do some searching within his soul.
The Bad: Her Auto-Tuned opening and chorus of “I’m looking for you,” make the listener (or the guy) want to run rather than be found.
8. “Automatic” featuring Nicki Minaj
Produced by Rico Love
Mari’s got a big ego. Never one to shy away from getting sexy on a song, the 21-year-old singer boldly declares that her sex game “will get you higher than a mutha,” over an aggressive, synth-heavy beat. Oh, you didn’t know? Go ask that dude that “Used to be a baller/ But now just a f**kin’ junkie.” Stepping it up a notch is raunchy rapper du jour Nicki Minaj, who claims that she and Mari “got that ish that make a n****’s nose wiggle.”
9. “Lights Go Down”
Produced by Rico Love
Opening with romantic guitar strings, this song does a complete 180 from the preceding track. Mari’s not screwing, she’s ready to make love to her man, and sets the tone with a smooth, silky contralto. The lyrics aren’t much to mention, but the beautiful cymbals and extremely light bass prove it to be a song worth adding to any Quiet Storm mixtape.
10. “Might Get Lucky”
Produced by Rico Love
On this mid-tempo track, Mari’s singing the praises of a guy who’s treating her the way she wants, and that if he continues “Treat[ing] her like a lady/ [She'll] let you be her baby.” She happily coos and croons if he “keep[s] this up, [we] might get down.” With what, exactly? “He might get lucky with ‘Automatic’,” she shared with the audience during the listening session.
11. “Emergency”
Produced by Rico Love
Here she’s caught up with another swagger-licious (read: bad) guy, and she’s tired of it. Over an urgent, synthesized beat, she becomes self-aware of the fact that she needs to switch-up her dating regimen. Otherwise, she’ll continue to be “hopeless/ . . . losing focus” and screwing herself in the same situation again. The track, however, is an unmemorable low point.
12. “Operator”
Produced by Rico Love
If you ever experienced the passive-aggressive wrath of your boyfriend after mistakenly turning his crisp white tees bright pink in the wash, you’ll be able to relate to where Mari is coming from on this joint. “Operator” drips of the sarcasm that a girl may experience when her man’s acting pissy and not answering her calls. What’s notable is that the song has a ’60s feel, as the chorus of “Hello operator, can you put my baby on the line?/ So we can get together later/ ‘Cause I really wanna spend some time,” harkens back to an era when groups such as Diana Ross & the Supremes ruled the airwaves.
13. “Built 4 This”
Produced by Oak
The album closer tells the story of a little girl who lost her way on the rise to the top, but somehow found her way back. Sound familiar? Every good female R&B album has a good “testimonial” record, and Mari works hard to make hers stand out. “They thought I was gone,” she sings in a voice at its strongest on the entire album. A winning track for a new woman ready to reclaim her throne.

Album - Verse Simmonds - Stories Of A Bachelor
Release Date: TBD
Tracklisting
1. “Substitute”
The first of many Stories told on this album is a smooth yet synth-heavy, mid-tempo track which should serve as a message to ladies everywhere in need of that certain, special attention she isn’t getting at home: Verse Simmonds will give it to you. Simmonds boldly croons that, “I’m the substitute lover/ If he don’t treat her right/ I’ll treat her better.” Neglectful boyfriends, watch your back!
2. “Swindle”
This particular track speaks to the male listeners, but to be fair, can be commiserated by females as well. The humorously-titled, uptempo song literally starts off quickly but figuratively comes to a crashing halt, as it is a depiction of what happens when you’ve left the club and arrived at someone’s house for a drunken booty call, only to find yourself looking in that person’s face and asking in disbelief, “What you mean you ain’t down with the get-down?” Quite the frustrating situation, mentally and physically.
3. “Grinding”
While still heavy on the bass, Verse slows his Story down to a mid-tempo groove to croon about enjoying his time whining up on a lady while dancing in the club. Not a standout, but it possibly led to inspire one of the many other tracks on the album.
4. “Birthday”
Forget Jeremih’s ode to getting freaky with your lady on her born day. Starting off with a unique reggae-tinged sound, Simmonds’ tune quickly morphs into a club anthem that’s sure to rock 365 days a year. Utilizing the refrain popularized by rapper 50 Cent, (“Go shorty, it’s your birthday”), as well as giving shout-outs to all of the Zodiac signs, Verse’s joint is dedicated to watching women “go hard” with their birthday celebrations all year round.
5. “Money in My Pocket”
Of course the key to being a successful bachelor is either covertly (or inadvertently) letting your status be known. This track takes the more obvious, yet not very noteworthy approach in doing so. While a high-energy base and a reggae riddim are cleverly blended to compliment Simmonds’ ability to seamlessly weave between singing and chanting, the song’s lyrics could’ve easily been borrowed from any other song on rotation at a strip club (“Don’t know if she like girls, but I’m hoping”). If this song were a dude, he wouldn’t be that different from the two next to him also trying to impress females by flashing wads of cash.
6. “Priceless”
The Story takes a break from the player’s prowl as this track finds Simmonds singing the praises of a real woman worth settling down with. Though the woman in question may be invaluable, this song falls short of its unattainable title: the lyrics and Simmonds’ voice sound familiar to Akon’s “Don’t Matter.”
7. “I’m Sorry”
This mid-tempo song reveals where someone can find themselves after they’ve played one too many games with another person’s mind and heart: waking up alone, pondering what went wrong, and wishing they could regain what they lost. “I’m Sorry” serves as a verbal apology, the back-up plan requisite to any bachelor’s modus operandi.
8. “Come to Me”
While previewing this song for his audience, Simmonds was met with a look of disbelief when he announced that he was unsure if this track would make the album’s final cut. Who knew that a booming synth and bass mixed with a sample of Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing,” topped with Simmonds’ accent-tinged singing would work as the perfect seduction track? Arguably the best song that may never make it to the album, “Come to Me” has the right amount of naughtiness yet leaves plenty of room to visualize where the night could lead: “Turn the lights down low, let the music flow/ We can sip a little Mo’ and let the good times roll.” Not a bad prelude to sexual healing. (Bonus: The remix features the late, great Notorious B.I.G.’s first verse from “F*** You Tonight.”)
9. “Island Love”
If the preceding song didn’t hint toward a certain point, then this track attempts to drive it home: there’s a reason why Stella got her groove back in Jamaica. The album’s most heavily reggae-influenced track, “Island Love” highlights all of the benefits of dating a guy from the islands. Not very convincing.
10. “Boomerang”
Of course, no bachelor’s story is complete without discussing the boomerang that’s highlighted with a star next to her name in his BlackBerry. Simply put in a lyric? “Girl, you look so good, I had to do you twice.” Straight and to the point, Simmonds chants over a lighter, more pop-inspired background to describe that chick that keeps him coming back for seconds. Your ears may not have the same voracious appetite for this one.
11. “Absurd”
Taking hints from both Europe and India’s musical influences, this joint invokes a feeling of partying at a London discothèque. The song features an East Indian-accented singer on the chorus, as well as a background slightly reminiscent of the very popular (and overused) “A Milli” sample. Simmonds may not get any play with the song in this country, but its whimsicalness may serve it well on a different continent.
12. “Buy You a Round (Up and Down)”
The album wraps up with the currently touted first single that’s sure to be a bonafide hit. The ladies will bounce to it and the fellas will use it as their personal anthems to help elevate their game. The bachelor mixes up singing, chanting, and rhyming over a minimal, thumping bass as he searches for a target, ahem, single lady, so that he may buy drinks for her and her friends.

Album: Jennifer Lopez - Love?
Release Date: April 13th, 2010
Tracklisting
1. “Everybody’s Girl”
Produced by Mike Caren, Written by Wynter Gordon
It’s hard having a private life when you’re one of the most famous entertainers in the world. J.Lo questions whether her man is capable of loving her under the intense glare of the spotlight. “Can you love somebody when their everybody’s girl?” she asks over the slick uptempo production, while the hook repeats: “Can you love, can you love, can you love a girl?” One of the standout tracks, this could easily be a single.
2. “What Is Love”
Produced by D’Mile, Written by Wynter Gordon
A version of this song leaked online earlier this year. The latest version has been mixed and hits harder with added drums. There is a “What Is Love (Part 2)” produced by Jean Baptiste that may or may not make the album.
3. “Starting Over”
Produced by Danja, Written by Wynter Gordon
Jenny from the Block describes the hardships of getting back in the game after a breakup. “I’m afraid of starting over,” she sings over Danja’s fast-paced, galloping beat, while admitting she’s “still in love” with the man she left. “It’s like my whole existence he holds in his hands.”
4. “This Cannot Be Love”
Produced by Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins
The beginning sounds like the chords from another Darkchild joint, Brandy and Monica’s duet “The Boy Is Mine.” It quickly picks up the pace with an electro-pop beat and speedy hook (“This cannot be love, this can’t be love, this can’t be love,” she repeats). J.Lo wonders whether true love exists. “How could something that felt so right turn so wrong? … I need to know right now,” she demands. The production gets more aggressive towards the end.
5. “One Love”
Produced by D’Mile, Written by A-Plus
“Took a shot with a bad boy from the block,” she croons on the leaked track. It won’t take long for listeners to make the connection to Sean “Diddy” Combs. “Mr. Wrong, he plays his part,” she says of her former music mogul boyfriend. But J.Lo is on to the next one, in search for that one true love of a lifetime. She counts her famous lovers by the numbers, #3 being Ben Affleck (“Came and swept me off my feet/ Went nowhere, but kept the ring/ Once again I’m lonely”) and her current husband Marc Anthony (“#4, you sang to me, but I’m not sure … Made me want to try once more and I couldn’t say no.”)
6. “Keeper”
Produced by Danja, Written by Britney Bereal and Luke Boyd
After much searching, J.Lo finally finds Mr. Right. The beat is somewhat reminiscent of T.I.’s “Hell of a Life,” which Danja also produced. “You give me so much love, you keep it locked down,” she sings on the bouncy hook. “It doesn’t matter what they tell me … That boy’s a keeper.” One of our favorites. Danja contributed another track called “Love and War” that was not played.
7. “Beautiful”
Produced by Mike Caren, Written by Chris Sernel
A guitar-driven ballad that sounds like it was made for a movie. In fact, it may be used during the end credits for The Back-Up Plan. “Some days I feel beautiful, just not today,” she sings on the Ryan Tedder-esque production.
“Louboutins,” the first single helmed by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream, as well as the Pitbull-assisted, Neptunes-produced buzz record “Fresh Out the Oven” will also be on the album.

Last Thursday night, industry insiders sipped cocktails in the lobby of New York City’s Rubin Museum of Art for the unveiling of Janelle Monáe’s latest masterpiece. A vacation from the expected gallery unveiling, the crowd skeptically eyed tall shadowy figures in mirrored masks that floated around, greeting guests. Portions of the Grammy-nominated singer’s eagerly-awaited debut The ArchAndroid, due May 18, played in the background of a short “Emotion Picture” that the eclectic chanteuse co-directed starring OutKast’s Big Boi, poet Saul Williams, psychedelic dance-punk troupe Of Montreal, and the Wondaland Arch Orchestra.
As guests situated themselves, the radiantly quirky Ms. Monáe appeared on stage in kimono-like garb, hair coiffed to perfection. In a state of doe-eyed effervescence, she urged her guests to enjoy, dance, and “act a fool.” Diddy’s short on-screen introduction and endorsement of Monáe’s work was superfluous—she had ‘em singlehandedly sold. Genre-bending tracks such as “Dance or Die” and “Wondaland” exemplified her cyber-soul persona with celestial beats and vocals.
A true testament to her fans’ loyalty, as well as the quality of the music, everyone definitely loosened up and transformed into concertgoers. Shoulder shimmies turned into all-out “shake it like a Polaroid picture” mode within 10 minutes. And if this album moved a crowd of critics out of their seats, we think it just might move the rest of us to click the “Buy” button next to her pretty little pout on iTunes.
Here are some of our favorites:
1. “Cold War”
It’s easy to detect OutKast’s influence on Monáe’s composition on this up-tempo track. The snare-induced beat sets a solid background for her strong vocals, which she actually allows to upstage everything else. The lyrics run with the intensity of the beat as she sings, “This is a cold war/ You better know what you’re fighting for,” guitar solos playing into her warning.
2. “Tightrope” featuring Big Boi
“I’ll take your pain away,” Monáe promises as she opens the Big Boi-assisted first single. And she does. The crowd lost it during this one, fresh yet familiar, and boasting a retro beat that brings back all the pleasurable convulsing from OutKast’s “Hey Ya!” music video. Big Boi’s verse complements her delightfully scattered disposition as well.
3. “Locked Inside”
Soulful and somewhat revealing, this song slows it down a little bit in the name of love. “Oh how I need you love, you are so crazy/ I need you baby,” she croons to the beat of a laid-back summer jam. With somewhat of a throwback feel, Monáe seems to be channeling Michael Jackson’s versatility and Estelle’s sensual vocals.
4. “Mushrooms & Roses”
This hippie-fied, jazz guitar-ridden track excavates Monáe’s electro-sensibility; the snare-heavy number pushes the blurred vocals to the back burner. It’s reflective, swaying music, a little psychedelic but not enough to drive it away from the soul of the rest of the album. Monáe shies away from flaunting her vocal chops on this one, letting herself echo in the background.
There will be 18 tracks on The ArchAndroid. The tracklisting below is not final and is in no particular order.
