CNBC “The Rise of America’s New Black Overclass” Featuring LeBron James, Terrell Owens, Lil Wayne, and More

March 1, 2009 by Porky · Leave a Comment

It’s an American success story. Self-made black multimillionaires, many of whom grew up poor,
have made vast fortunes in the sports, entertainment and media industries.

The new moguls made their millions under the age of 40, primarily by taking more ownership and control over their brands than their predecessors. Collectively, black athletes in the NFL, NBA, and in Major League Baseball earned nearly $4 billion last year and the nation’s 20 highest-paid hip-hop entrepreneurs brought in more than $500 million. Now, with their newfound wealth come responsibilities to their family, friends, and community.

Based on Lee Hawkins’ forthcoming book of the same title, NEWBOs: The Rise of America’s New Black Overclass examines the growing responsibilities of black celebrities in the Obama age. The project features personal stories and interviews with some of the biggest names in sports and entertainment. It’s an inside look into how each successful NEWBO surmounted challenges to achieve the American Dream.

Kanye West Defends Chris Brown, Michael Phelps’ Pot Pics

Kanye West’s controversial comments during a Feb. 13 taping of VH1’s Storytellers will be cut before the show airs this Sunday, Reuters reports.

The rapper defended Chris Brown, downplayed Michael Phelps’ controversial pot pics and slammed Radiohead during the show’s three-hour taping on Feb. 13 in L.A.

In the style of Storytellers episodes, VH1 filmed West — known for his outspoken personality — as he played his songs in an intimate setting and shared tidbits with the audience about how they were written. His controversial comments ended up on the cutting room floor, but not for political reasons, executive producer Bill Flanagan told Reuters.

“Can’t we give Chris a break?” West said to the crowd regarding Brown’s arrest for allegedly beating his girlfriend, Rihanna “I know I make mistakes in life.”

David Banner Sued for Allegedly Breaching Oral Contract

March 1, 2009 by Porky · Leave a Comment

David Banner has got the courtroom blues - he’s being sued by Davenport Lyons for breach of oral contract. The suit alleges that Banner entered into an oral agreement with Davenport Lyons, a partnership, that would provide legal and other professional services for Banner.

The court docs state, “Defendants were to play Plaintiff a specified fee for those legal services and other professional services.” Payment was not made, says Davenport Lyons, which is seeking more than $43,000 in damages and attorney’s fees.

The most interesting part of the suit is that Banner’s real name is Lavell Crump.

Cypress Hill Coming Back With New Album, Label

March 1, 2009 by Porky · Leave a Comment

Cypress Hill is finishing its first studio album in five years and planning a fall release on Suburban Noize Records, according to the group’s B-Real.

“We’re mixing right now,” B-Real, who just released his first solo album, “Smoke N Mirrors,” tells Billboard.com. He describes the rap troupe’s new music as “gritty. It’s aggressive. It’s like hip-hop straight-up. We just felt like we needed to go back to that raw, gritty hip-hop sound but try to find a way to bridge it with what’s going on now.”

B-Real says Cypress Hill worked with pals Everlast, Evidence and The Alchemist on the as-yet-untitled album, but he didn’t anticipate many other guests. “We don’t really do a lot of collaborations in Cypress. We keep it in house.” The group members have been mostly working on their own projects since 2004’s “Til Death Do Us Part” and a split with Columbia Records, their longtime label home.
